Dubai Flood 2024

UAE Braces for Aftermath of Devastating Rainfall

19 Lives Lost as Relentless Deluge Batters the Region

April 17, 2024 | Updated 7:06 PM

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and neighboring Oman have been hit by an unprecedented deluge of rainfall, causing widespread chaos and claiming the lives of at least 19 individuals.

The relentless rains commenced on Monday evening, inundating cities and causing severe flooding. By Tuesday evening, Dubai, the country's most populous city, had received over 142mm (5.59 inches) of rainfall, surpassing its average for the entire year.

The downpour has paralyzed transportation, with major roads and highways submerged. Emergency services have been overwhelmed, struggling to reach stranded motorists and evacuate residents from flooded areas.

The authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Schools and businesses have been closed indefinitely, and flights have been canceled at various airports.

Meteorologists warn that the rains are expected to persist for another 24 hours, raising concerns about further damage and potential loss of life.

The UAE's National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) is coordinating relief efforts, providing assistance to affected communities and offering support to rescue workers.

As the storm subsides, officials will begin to assess the extent of the damage and implement recovery measures.
